I have been staying near the city centre of Newcastle, NSW for the last 4-5 days. It really has been an enjoyable place to do some photography and walk the streets to view the historic buildings and heritage.

I walked along a street called Darby street a couple of days ago and viewed some inspiring photography in one of the art shops. After that I decided to take a series of photos along the waterfront.

Newcastle has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with a mixture of younger students to more matured locals who appreciate a good coffee, art and music. There seems to be plenty of activities in and around the city going on all the time.

There are many walkways with plenty of places to walk to. The inner city is mainly flat so it suits bicycles therefore bringing a bike or hiring one is worth while. You could take a walk to the public library and view the fountains at the same time. You could take a walk to the city water front and enjoy a stroll near the harbour while viewing the ferries and boats doing their thing. You could stop at one of the number of cafe or restaurants along the way. You might even catch a live band playing at the tavern like today, a reggae band was playing outside in front of the tavern.

Whatever you decide to do in Newcastle city, I’m sure you will have fun. Enjoy some of the pictures I have taken here below:

This hostel is very impressive in all areas. From the friendly male staff on arrival to the cleanliness and facilities, this YHA is easily the best I have stayed at. The female staff were ok but not as welcoming or as helpful.

I had expected this place to be good but it more than met my expectations. It has stunning views from the top large deck area. You are able to get a closeup inspection of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House right outside your room. It is stunning and breath taking views so bring your camera. Especially at sunset and night when the lights bring out a new dimension in the cityscape, you will be happy you brought your camera.

The hostel is very new so you will see some construction still taking place on arrival but nothing that bothers you. The building and design itself is very well thought out. The hostel is eco friendly with many ways to remind you that you can help the planet by recycling waste and not using too much water etc. Even lighting is kept to a minimum so much so that you only had one main light switch in the dorm. We kept the bathroom light on all night anyway in case someone wanted to go to the toilet. In fact the first night I had the whole dorm to myself which was fantastic.

The bathroom is what you expect in a good hotel, clean and efficient. The bedding and room were comfortable and since everything is quite new then that is a bonus of course.

The kitchen facilities are efficient while the dining area is spacious and nicely lit from natural light.

The main lounge/dining area is very comfortable and sociable. It has a great atmosphere.

Upstairs on the 3rd level where my dorm room was and where the roof patio is. There is a TV/DVD room with a large screen TV with cable. You can select many number of channels to watch or select a DVD from the library.

They also have storage areas, secure lockers in the rooms or if you check out you can also pay for storage from $4 for 4 hours for a large locker.

This hostel is nicely located although it is quite difficult to find but once you get there it’s ok after that.

Again, the Rocks YHA in Sydney’s Circular Quay is simply the best hostel in Sydney.

It has been about a year since I had stayed here at Australia’s largest YHA. I arrived to collect my new membership after traveling overseas. My room was waiting for me as I had booked easily online. The staff had also replied promptly to my email questions about baggage and getting there from the airport.

The staff even tried to let me check in earlier than the 12pm check in time but the room was still not ready so I had to leave some bags in storage. You can pay for storage from about $4 for 4 hours for a good sized locker that will fit a large backpack and a few other things including a mid size guitar. The only gripe is that I had to walk up a flight of stairs to the locker room as the lift does not get you there.

The staff at the Central YHA were all very helpful and some were very friendly. Much improved since last year when it was a mixed bag.

The rooms are still comfortable and spacious. Each bed in the dorm has it’s own light. The bathrooms are efficient although not always that clean.

The facilities at this YHA are great. They offer Internet access, laptop area to plug it in and work. There is plenty of seating and areas to relax. Sometimes the young men on the video machines and games areas can be extremely noisy. I remember this last year and it can be very annoying when you are working on the computer to hear some very loud noises from idiots playing these games and showing off.

The kitchen area is large and the dining room as well. It seems well catered and setup in this area.

The only thing though as this place is quiet busy so if you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere then I would suggest the Railway YHA or the Rocks YHA.

Overall though a good place to stay in the heart of Sydney and close to everything for an affordable price.

I have uploaded a new video of the dorm room:

If you are not looking forward to another winter in the States, then you need to head south. To avoid the throngs of people heading to Florida and the desert regions of the South West, a trip to sunny Australia is in order. Being that the country (which is also a continent) is south of the equator, the seasons there are opposite of the northern hemisphere. So, while your friends and family freeze during the winter months, you can enjoy a sunny day along the miles and miles of sandy beaches in Australia.

Be prepared for the beaches when you go. Sunburns and sunstroke can be common ailments if a person does not take care of themselves. Proper levels of SPF must be applied on a regular basis to avoid burns. A minimum level of SPF 30 is highly recommended for a day at the beach.

Another safety precaution is to ensure that plenty of water is consumed. By staying hydrated, the every day visit at the beach will not end in heat stroke. The body is around 80% water and needs to maintain its hydration levels. Long exposure to the sun and heat can drain the body of healthy levels, and it needs to be replenished. Taking the proper safety precautions will ensure your vacation will be fully enjoyed.

While international travel can be dangerous, the locals in Australia are friendly, and welcome American visitors. Just make sure you treat them the way you would want to be treated. While they do speak English, remember that they have a slightly different vernacular. You must listen to tone of voice to ensure you pick up the right meaning of what the local “Aussie” is saying. If they sound jovial, they are most likely happy. If they sound angry though, they are probably angry, and you should safely remove yourself from the situation. Remember, be safe, but enjoy your vacation.

In addition to the beaches of Australia, there are also mountainous regions that you can camp, fish, and hike through in order to see some of the most beautiful water falls and other landmarks in the world. You will enjoy spending time on the beach, but you will also enjoy leaving the beach and heading into the mountains for a day tour. You will see many different animals and other creatures that you won’t find back home.

Australia is home to many varieties of fish, frogs, and other animals that you will not find in other parts of the world. Because its ecosystem is so fragile, it is not recommended that you take any plants or wildlife back home with you. This will only disturb the natural order of things. You should enjoy your vacation in Australia and return whenever you can because the countryside is different from most parts of the world. You will enjoy the clear water in the ocean, lakes, and streams, and the fresh air in the mountains.

A large country like Australia is difficult to see all in one go, unless of course you plan to stay here for a very long time. Perhaps you will want to make a few return visits after getting a taste for it! As with any destination, travelling to Australia can be expensive and if you’re on a tight budget the best way to save money is to stay at one of the many Australian hostels.

Most Australians are ok with roughing it a bit and that is why there are a number of choice for staying at excellent hostels throughout the country. Why not skip the expensive Australian hotels when you come down under? Instead stay at a hostel and spend those dollars on the things that you will really remember.

Hostels do not discriminate on the basis of age. There is a common misconception that “hostel” means younger people hostel and the only people allowed to check in are young students. Maybe this was the case in times past but today it really isn’t true. Hostels are for budget travellers of any who don’t mind sharing a few amenities and or rooms with other travellers.

Australia Hostels will allow you to save lots of money when you sleep in hostels – but that’s not the only reason people do it. There’s no better way to meet other travellers and like minded people. You’ll share stories, travel tips, a meal and maybe even a beer or two and who knows you may even make a few life long friends. when it’s time to hit the hay, staying in the typical dormitory style rooms can be less than ideal for some people so hostels these days will often have a some private rooms available. They may charge a little more for these but it’s still cheaper than a hotel.

We suggest to check the YHA hostels for a goodplace to start as these are usually some of the better ones but still affordable and then yu can go and check othe hostels out while you are here.

Interested about Wildlife in Australia? If you are landing in Sydney, a couple of places are distinguished for this purpose. Discover furry koalas, skipping kangaroos and shy platypus in zoos and wildlife parks just minutes from the heart of Sydney city.

Don’t expect to see kangaroos or reptiles when you have landed in Sydney, if you do, you must have landed somewhere else. Many tourists still reckon Australia as a land with kangaroos everywhere, but that is not the case. Most kangaroos are seen in bushes because they are herbivorous; in it is where they feel safe.

The easiest way to experience fauna in Sydney is to transport to the zoos, the largest collection of the city’s wildlife is at Taronga Zoo located in the near north of Sydney, its size and years of serving visitors make it a spectacular place to discover wildlife. Getting there can be accomplished by a twelve minute ferry from Circular Quay and the Central Business District. If you prefer a scenic view, transport through one of the cable cars of Sky Safari that operates from the Top Entrance to the Ferry Wharf from 9.30am to 5.00pm daily. Want to self drive? Campervan hire in Sydney is as easy as renting a regular automobile, there are many campervan depots in Sydney.

Some people wishes to discover Australian wildlife up close in their habitat. One way of doing this is hiring a 4WD, depending on your intended wildlife location; some areas can be accessed by a regular campervan. Why not, if you have more than a day and would love to do other stuff like hiking, camping, etc, this is a call for adventure. Handle some safety while doing this and always as a local about animal behaviors.

A famous wildlife haven in Sydney is the Sydney Wildlife World located just a few walk from the main centre. It is an ideal place to see wildlife given the limited time. Sydney Wildlife World is adjacent to Sydney Aquarium, between Cockle Bay and King St Wharf. Also consider Featherdale Wildlife Park, located in the western Sydney suburb of Doonside, about 40 minutes by road from the Sydney centre.
